Projectwide Engineering Lead

Job Introduction

The Project wide Engineering Lead is responsible for all Projectwide engineering functions not embedded in one of the three Delivery Units. These functions include: 

  • Temporary Works 
  • Engineering & Tunnel Survey 
  • CDM 
  • Technical Claims & Investigations 
  • Geotechnical 
  • Materials  

The Project wide Engineering Lead ensures the works are technically correct, assured, and coordinated between disciplines to facilitate delivery. They must collaborate closely with all other DU Engineering leads and the relevant operational leads in with the aim of a delivery of the project to the right quality, and demonstrate the highest standards of technical integrity.

This is a senior technical management role reporting to the Head of Engineering.

Role Responsibility

  • Leading the Project wide Engineering teams across SCS (S1/S2), ensuring consistency across the DU and asset team, and ensuring diligent and timely reporting, escalating as appropriate. 
  • Discharging appropriate Lead Designer duties
  • Fostering Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) 
  • Championing Health, Safety and Welfare (HS&W)
  • Challenging the team to Innovate and not accept the status quo
  • Leading compliance with the CDM 2015 Regulations from a technical perspective
  • Ensuring collaborative working, the right behaviours and culture within the team 
  • Appropriately identify, manage, communicate and mitigate Risk 
  • Prioritise appropriate and integrated technical change control.  Ensuring that it is managed, monitored and the implications (including derogations) are assessed and authorised, as appropriate.
  • Liaising and interfacing with other appropriate disciplines and third parties: Commercial, Planning, Consents & Engagement etc (not exhaustive list) providing the necessary technical input as a principal project Subject Matter Expert (SME) where applicable.
  • Ensuring that the works are appropriately considerate for maintenance and health, safety and welfare during construction and in-use. 
  • Ensuring that the delivered permanent and temporary designs are subject to constructability reviews
  • Management of appropriate technical subcontractors
  • Identifying and implement opportunities for optimization of project programme
  • Management of Design integration and change control during construction

The Ideal Candidate

  • Educated to degree or higher and hold relevant professional qualification
  • Sustained Continuing Professional Development. 
  • Extensive experience in project-based design and engineering management across all project stages
  • Extensive experience of large complex infrasturcture projects in the rail, highways, water or energy sectors.
  • Expert understanding of Engineering Principles and extensive technical knowledge 
  • Experience of managing the challenges associated with multi-disciplinary teams. 
  • Understanding of digital engineering in design and construction phases and of using the Digital Plan of Works.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Proven experience of driving change through influence as required to work within a matrix management structure
  • Relevant CSCS Card

About the Company

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
