Job Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a project which will expose the candidate to a wide range of systems, software, skills, expertise and insight. The Senior GIS Technician is a core member of the GIS Team within the BIM Team at SCS Railways, splitting time equally between the Environment Team and the Consents & Engagement Team, providing a GIS Service to each. The successful candidate will be capable of managing the workload and prioritising tasks, whilst also having high technical skills to develop fit-for-purpose GIS applications, automations, and integrations with third-party systems.

As a Senior GIS Technician, the ideal candidate would continuously strive to explore latest innovations for delivering bespoke geospatial solutions to the Consents & Engagement and Environment Teams, ensuring appropriate time management of workloads coming from these two teams.

There will be potential for technical development and implementation of automated processes and workflows to develop quality assurance and validation tools, reducing manual intervention required during data processing.

This role also provides opportunities for the successful candidate to work with a range of Geographic Information and ETL Systems (ArcGIS suite and FME) and identifying opportunities for integrating GIS with the project’s Common Data Environments (CDEs), CAD/BIM and Third-Party APIs.

The nature of this role also calls for strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with various stakeholders in pursuit of delivering engaging and fit-for-purpose GIS solutions, assisting in decision-making and project delivery.

  • Consents, Undertakings & Assurances - creation and development of GIS tools for manipulation and interrogation of complex datasets, supported by automated workflows and integrations with project systems such as Bentley AssetWise and Microsoft SharePoint.
  • Utilise ETL tools, such as FME, to enable CAD to GIS conversions and automated data processes, which support data quality assurance and validation.
  • Drive delivery of environmental GIS Data to HS2 (Ecology & Biodiversity, No Net Loss (NNL), Landscape Mapping, Cultural Heritage, Water & Flood Risk, and Sound, Noise & Vibration).

The Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Geomatics, GIS, Geography or Surveying.
  • Strong Knowledge of the ESRI ArcGIS Suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, Experience Builder, Dashboards, Field Apps – Survey123/FieldMaps, Arcade).
  • Experience in geospatial data reconciliation & ETL automation (e.g. FME).
  • Experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, Javascript), enterprise geodatabases and APIs, would be advantageous.
  • Good understanding of CDEs and GIS-BIM integration processes.
  • Fluent in the use of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), email/internet, and other IT applications.
  • Effective communicator and collaborative in approach – the role will involve working with numerous people from different parties.
