Logistics Manager (Imports)

Job Introduction

The Logistics Manager (Imports) will join the SCS Logistics team that manages logistics across the HS2 main works. They will be responsible for creating and maintaining Construction Logistics Plans and processes which encompasses 22 sites across the SCS trace. 

They key objective is to ensure excellence and consistency in our construction logistics activity. The individual will provide support to the Head of Logistics Operations and 3 Area Logistics Managers to periodically review and update these plans to reflect changes to the construction sites. The Logistics Team will support engagements with the site teams.   

Key to the role is relationship management with the senior teams in the areas to build rapport, establish working relationships and provide a level of escalation for issues.

All Logistics team members will be expected to work in the team providing support, cover and developing best practice. 

The role is aimed at construction logistics professionals who can demonstrate a track-record of achievement in project, people and client management in scale projects. Role Responsibility

  • Plan, organise, and oversee the export, import, and delivery of significant construction equipment for the project.
  • Collaborate closely with the SCS Tunnelling and Civils teams to develop and implement processes for the management of equipment and consumables.
  • Establish, maintain, and communicate detailed equipment transport plans and timelines.
  • Liaise with site teams, manufacturers, and transport organisations (road, sea, and rail) to coordinate logistics activities effectively.
  • Ensure all necessary customs documentation is prepared and payments are made to facilitate seamless transit into the UK.
  • Forecast, schedule, and track deliveries using the SCS system.
  • Manage abnormal load movements in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain and monitor customs clearance forecasts to support project planning.
  • Provide additional support as required to the Head of Logistics Operations.
  • Produce accurate sales invoices for export customs purposes.
  • Manage and oversee information flow between suppliers and customs agents.
  • Maintain detailed financial registers for VAT and tax duties.
  • Ensure strict compliance with Incoterms and relevant commodity codes.
  • Coordinate just-in-time international deliveries and collections with multiple stakeholders.
  • Procure and manage international transport services for project assets.
  • Lead major delivery readiness reviews, ensuring alignment between suppliers and SCS end-users.
  • Conduct transport feasibility studies and produce initial swept path designs to mitigate risks associated with abnormal load transport.
  • Generate and present management reports to meet SCS and HS2 requirements.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of International Commercial Terms (Incoterms).
  • Must have experience in complex and abnormal load handling.
  • Experience in planning, executing, and monitoring logistics plans in line with construction timelines.
  • Experience with procurement processes and supplier negotiations.
  • Ability to deputise for Area Logistics Managers or Head of Construction Logistics .
  • Good knowledge of site establishment, ongoing operations, and maintenance.
  • Good understanding of safe operational practices for vehicles, equipment, and methods of loading and off-loading.
  • Practical experience in materials scheduling, planning, and organising deliveries to and from sites.
  • Experience liaising with stakeholders, including local authorities, police, and highways authorities.
  • Working knowledge of the Code of Construction Practice, CLOCS, FORS.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Practical understanding of Temporary Traffic Management and Consents.
  • Proven ability to work in high-pressure, complex operational and political environments, meeting tight deadlines and responding to rapidly changing circumstances and objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (essential).
  • Good IT skills, including proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (essential).
  • Team player with strong collaboration skills.
  • Effective problem solver.
  • Positive “can do” attitude.

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
