Engineering manager

Job Introduction

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to the construction delivery teams.
  • Input into the detailed design management system reviewing and providing constructability advice to both the permanent works designers, temporary works designers and the construction delivery team.
  • Identify critical engineering interfaces in advance of the works to ensure that they can be managed to minimize exposure to unnecessary risk.
  • Manage and coordinate the I&M / construction teams to deliver the works safely and ensure asset protection requirements of third parties such as Network Rail/TfL are met through monitoring and reporting.
  • Identify opportunities for optimization of project programme through review and challenging established construction activity, sequence and constraints.
  • Identify weaknesses in current construction logic and provide solution options.
  • Ensure pre-construction deliverables are in place and too acceptable stand
  • Provide input into the development of ITP’s to ensure that sufficient assurance documentation is identified to allow compliance with the project assurance requirements.
  • Promote best practice in safety management through application of risk assessment.
  • Provide focus and leadership for the identification, initiation and implementation of temporary works with the Area Temporary works Manger / TWC and the construction teams.
  • Advise the permanent works designer of any temporary conditions, or loads, that should be considered in the permanent works design.
  • Undertake constructability reviews and provide input appropriate to the nature f the works, review ITP’s WPP’s, NCR’s.
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.
  • Provide challenge, support and review to the quality delivery of packages and their closeout

Required qualifications, skills, behaviors and attributes

  • Chartered (or near Chartered) member of the ICE or equivalent (essential)
  • Engineering or Design Management experience (essential)
  • Construction experience (essential)
  • Experience of heavy piling and craneage (desirable)
  • Experience of shaft, bridges, cut and cover tunnels, earthworks, utilities construction (desirable)
  • Experience of RC concrete formwork, falsework, systems techniques
  • Knowledge/Experience of technical assurance, handover and technical interface.
  • Management of Temporary works (desirable)
  • Understanding and application of COP’s and HSWA 1974
  • Thorough understanding and application of the CDM Regulations 2015.

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.

Role

Candidates for Engineering Manager must have a proven experience of large-scale civil engineering projects. Your previous/background experience will likely have been within Construction Project Management and now you are looking to use your depth of knowledge in support of others.

Role includes all the aspect of engineering responsibility for delivery of bridges, earthworks, RC structures, noise barriers and headhouses. This includes management and interface with I&M, asset protection, third parties (inc. Network Rail, Local Authorities and Utilities) and tunneling works.

A practical and working knowledge of the processes and procedures for the delivery of works with emphasis on, quality, technical assurance, survey, rail and I&M disciplines in relation both temporary and permanent works activities.

Knowledge and experience are the key attributes for the role along with strong interpersonal organizational team working skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. The confidence to challenge is also a desirable attribute as the role will support the Construction delivery team in providing guidance to them whilst maintaining a focus on deliverables.

You will be responsible to the Area Lead Engineering Manager.
