Tunnel Survey Manager

Job Introduction

Within the SCS tunnelling Team, reporting to Tunnelling Manager. Liaising with the Area Senior Surveyors to provide best practice advice and guidance for all underground surveying activities (SCL & TBM works).

Role Responsibility

  • Collaborating with the Tunnel construction Teams to ensure that the survey requirements are met in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Defining strategies, methods of works and procedures to ensure that surveys are carried out efficiently and accurately and comply with the relevant contractual tolerances and standards.
  • Ensure as-built wriggle data is collected, recorded, analyzed, and reported as contractual requirement.
  • Setting up, testing, calibrating, and operating a variety of survey and positioning instrumentation, including TBM guidance systems.
  • Setting up of systems for monitoring of tunnel convergence.
  • External liaison with client, sub-contractors and suppliers.
  • Be familiar and demonstrate commitment to the project safety and environmental systems.
  • Developing, guiding, and mentoring the tunnel surveying team.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Professional surveying qualification (Degree/Diploma level or appropriate equivalent)
  • Relevant CSCS card.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in major civil engineering or infrastructure projects including minimum 5 years within tunneling works.
  • Previous experience of TBM works essential and previous experience of SCL and shaft works would be an advantage.
  • Significant experience of underground survey control including establishment, transfer from above ground and adjustment of networks. Previous experience of gyroscopic equipment would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in use of surveying software packages.
  • Ability to collaborate and integrate within multi-national and diverse workforce.

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks, and the construction of site compounds.
