TBM Tunnel Engineering Manager

Job Introduction

In general the function of the TBM Tunnel Engineering Manager (Core) is to support the TBM tunnel delivery teams in advance of the works starting. In general terms this will consist of:

  • Responsibility for all ‘engineering’ aspects of the readiness for TBM tunnel construction, including the development of the DTAP process and all the associated approvals.

The role will form part of the Technical Services Team and report to the Lead Tunnel Engineering Manager. It is envisaged that the role will eventually be seconded to one of the TBM tunnel drives.

The TBM TEM will have the facility to use the team of support engineers within the Core team to assist in the delivery of the aspects below.

Role Responsibility

  • Development of, and management of the readiness review process for TBM tunnelling.
  • Planning, coordination and production of all the required documentation to enable tunnelling to commence.
  • Managing the development of the DTAP process in accordance with the SCEWS, including the holding of SRG meetings, the relevant escalation process and the production of the DTAP sheets
  • Contributing to the review of the Ground Movement Assessments, in conjunction with the Area teams and the subsequent coordination of any settlement mitigation works along the route with the tunnelling works
  • Being the focal point between the various 3rd  parties / utilities teams (for the affected tunnel drives) and the tunnel delivery team, ensuring that 3rd party approvals are not delayed
  • Working with the I&M team in the coordination of the drafting of the Monitoring Action Plans for the tunnel drive
  • Taking the lead on technical matters related to TBM tunnelling
  • Having a working knowledge of the relevant QA processes and implementing them with the delivery team

The Ideal Candidate

  • Engineering degree, preferably chartered – or working towards
  • Project management experience
  • TBM, preferably EPB, tunnelling experience necessary

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
