TBM Shift Engineer
Job Introduction
The shift engineer will be responsible for the TBM works on site, taking a significant role in delivery as well as managing aspects of time, cost and quality. Will acquire technical (engineering/tunnelling), leadership and project management skills and experience.
Role Responsibility
Authoring of Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Work Package Plans
Carry out briefings (Method Statement, Start of Shift, Safety Alert etc.) as and when required
Ensure safety, environmental and quality non conformances are reported to the Sub Agent in a timely manner
Preparation of ITP’s, TARM’s, TIDP’s etc. in line with project QA/Technical Assurance requirements
Input towards detailed programming
Reporting progress and providing detailed narrative on delays/problems/innovation on shift or in control room
Assist in procurement materials
Input in optimisation of site layout/setup to maximize efficiency of operation
Maintain a proactive approach to problem solving in conjunction with the site team as required and reporting on solutions found
Assist in preparation and implementation of Tunnel Asset specific Activity Readiness Review/ Rady to Bore
Maintaining shift records in the formats required
Providing task specific setting out information/sketches as required
Maintaining detailed and accurate site diary
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience in EPB TBM Tunnelling
- CSCS card
- Engineering Degree / HNC or similar in a construction discipline
- SSSTS desired
- Tunnel Safety Training Scheme (TSTS) desired but will be provided
- Temporary Works Supervisor / coordinator training (desired)
- Experience with SCL or tunnel construction techniques

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both
Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is
around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels
(TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks
and the construction of site compounds.
