Sustainability & Carbon Lead

Job Introduction

About the role:

Sustainability & Carbon Lead, focusing on climate change & carbon emissions, resource efficiency & circular economy. Managing the core sustainability team, reporting to the Environment Director.

Responsible for coordination of:

  • Sustainability governance and strategic direction,
  • Project-wide carbon (GHG) emissions measurement and reporting,
  • Project-wide carbon (GHG) emissions minimisation: key opportunity identification & delivery structure
  • Sustainability culture: collaboration & communication across project team & supply chain during construction and handover phase of the S1 and S2 HS2 Main Works Civils Contract.

Role Responsibility

  • Active contribution to the SCS JV Environment & Sustainability Strategy
  • Coordination and leadership, together with Environment Director, of senior management on sustainability matters
  • Set up and maintain a carbon management system for the project, in line with PAS2080
  • Regular quantification and reporting of project-wide whole life cycle carbon emissions
  • Identification, delivery coordination and guidance on key sustainability opportunities
  • Sustainability progress monitoring, reporting & leveraging improved performance via suitable metrics
  • Structure & coordination of the carbon reduction efforts across the different project delivery areas
  • Pitch and support innovative sustainability initiatives to improve the environmental performance of the project
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration within SCS integrated project team on sustainability: design, engineering, construction, project controls, QSs, BIM, logistics, procurement, commercial & other functions
  • Supply chain engagement, pre- and post- award of supply contracts: suitable input to contract requirements & tender questions, supplier response assessment, supplier coordination & progress monitoring during contract delivery, performance assessment
  • Deliver sustainability-related communications, awareness raising & training
  • Represent SCS in relevant carbon and sustainability industry forums
  • Oversee the project’s CEEQUAL assessment and performance

The Ideal Candidate

Essential:

  • Background in engineering, science or environmental studies.
  • Set up & delivery of sustainability and carbon management programmes
  • Experience in carbon accounting and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), preferably for the construction industry
  • Acumen of climate change and wider sustainability topics: decarbonisation over the life cycle of projects, resource efficiency, circular economy, design for durability, deconstruction and re-use, renewable energy & alternative fuels, sustainable solutions etc. in the context of construction
  • Experience in working effectively within a multidisciplinary team, taking a collaborative approach
  • Team leadership and engagement skills
  • Good analytical, presentation and report writing skills
  • Prioritisation, organization & task coordination skills
  • Passion for Environmental Sustainability, driving innovation and an ability and desire to positively influence and develop those around them

 

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of sustainability rating schemes for construction like CEEQUAL & BREEAM
  • Experience in construction projects

About the Company

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
