Senior Electrical Design Manager

Job Introduction

The Senior Electrical Design Manager shall be responsible, within the MEP Design Management team, for the technical and production management of electrical design, including its interfaces and integration across the programme for the Shaft and Portals. The design to Stage 4 is procured through a Joint Venture Consultant and developed through Stage 5 by installation contractors and contractor’s coordinator/integrator.  As the project progresses from Stage 4 to Stage 5, with Trade contractors engaged, this role will include responsibilities for package management of the design requirements within the Trades Contractors’ scope.

Role Responsibility

The Electrical Senior Design Manager shall manage the provision of the design information provided by Design House (the Consultants), the development and integration of Sub Contractor led designs and constructability reviews (managed by the Package Managers plus Others). 

They will take the lead I coordinating the design programme and deliverables for a number of assets where they are allocated across this role and two other lead MEP design managers.

The resources and design accountabilities are provided from within the Supply Chain; the Design Manager shall ensure that design production and acceptances are compliant with the project requirements and SCS goals and apply safety in construction principles within design. 

The role of the Electrical Senior Design Manager Work will be to work jointly with SCS’s partners to plan MEP design activities, defining detailed scope and enforcing a progressive approach to technical assurance, including supply chain responsibilities.

The production of design deliverables shall be managed by an agreed schedule.  Deliverables are to satisfy high standards for safety, sustainability, constructability, quality and cost.  All works must be delivered in accordance with the contract requirements and deviations recorded - as per an agreed change control process.

The Electrical Senior Design Manager shall generate and maintain robust planning and reporting systems for each stage of MEP design assurance.

The scope consists of multiple design components that span across varying systems.  The Electrical Senior Design Manager shall manage the day-to-day interactions with internal stakeholders (e.g. Construction Teams, Logistics etc.) as well as external interfaces, such as the Employer and third-party stakeholders (e.g. Network Rail, London Underground, Thames Water etc.).

Working collectively with all other design managers, the Electrical Senior Design Manager shall coordinate the design, processes, reporting and change control elements throughout design and installation phases.

The role requires the candidate to engage in lessons learnt and to lead constructability reviews with relevant parties to ensure the design goals are aligned with the project installation strategy. 

The Electrical Senior Design Manager shall interrogate the design to support procurement and construction, Safe by Design, minimise environmental impact with a view to future carbon neutrality, maximise opportunity for value engineering and check compliance to the scope.

The role will extend into the construction delivery phase of the project and up to testing and commissioning where all assurances must be reached to evidence full completion of the works.  Design compliance is an inherent task for the design managers and securing the progressive documentation of design compliance is a prime deliverable with input and coordination with the quality team.

Each Design Manager will be responsible for a portfolio of particular areas/buildings within the Programme, within the MEP Design Management team.  The Electrical Senior Design Manager will be allocated the assets (vent shafts and/or head houses within the Central sections of the works and need to collaborate with the Electrical Design Manager of the Eastern and Western sections for uniformity of design, specifications and schedules (equipment sections)

Other Responsibilities

  • Conduct themselves ethically with appropriate behaviour, at all times
  • Lead the Electrical interfacing with all Mechanical, Public Health, Fire (passive and active) and Comms design activities including attention to primary and secondary services and commissioning needs
  • Managing all design interfaces and coordinating the Electrical components with the civil, architectural and building works
  • Preparation of the work schedule for Electrical Design activities, listing all document submittals and monitoring expediting the timely submission and acceptance of documents
  • Undertake Package Manager functions in respect to the stage 5 design activities and collaborate with asset/discipline specific delivery teams.
  • Work closely with the relevant SCS Construction / Package Managers to ensure that the design outputs are aligned with the construction strategy
  • Co-ordinate design constructability reviews
  • Manage the Electrical Design process
  • Be responsible for the monitoring accurately of outflow and inflow Electrical design documents
  • Ensure that the works are designed in accordance with the contract requirements and that any deviations are recorded in writing between the Consultant and the Contractor
  • Provide input into the MEP related procurement process and providing information with respect to MEP design
  • Identify design requirements for temporary works where they will interact with the permanent installations, including assistance to prepare solutions design
  • Coordinate technical assurances requirements
  • Track the progress of design documentation and facilitate regular reviews with the construction and client teams
  • Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health, Safety and Environmental Policies
  • Implement the relevant requirements of the Safety Management System within their area of responsibility
  • Ensure that the design and design records provide the information required for the Health and Safety files and processes, statutory and contract specific
  • Manage and coordinate the design interface and integration between Electrical Services and other Design Organisations (premises, civils, L&E, track and tunnelling), PFIs and Third Parties
  • Internal liaison with the Construction Team, QA team and Cost Control
  • External liaison with HS2, Subcontractors / Suppliers and Stakeholders, close co-ordination with the Design Manager required
  • Manage, mentor and develop junior team members and graduate engineers

The Ideal Candidate

This role demands knowledge and experience of Electrical systems and its interfaces.  The candidate must have 10+ years’ experience of working through project life cycles within large services biased and infrastructure projects across London Underground, Network Rail and Crossrail, have held a previous management positions with responsibilities of directing a large team (approximate value of £50m+).

Essential:

  • Degree level qualification in Electrical Building Services Engineering (or related subject, or demonstrated suitable and equal experience)
  • Experience working for a contractor on a major infrastructure project
  • Minimum 10 years practical experience within delivery of Electrical Services
  • Experience though the entire life cycle of a services orientated major project
  • Proactive in resolving problems and project result oriented
  • Excellent scheduling, organizing and progress control.  Ability to prioritize work in a high- pressure environment
  • Enthusiastic team player, excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience across LUL, Network Rail, Crossrail
  • Computer competence (MS Word, Excel, SharePoint).
  • Relevant CSCS Card
  • Strong understanding of Engineering Principles and CDM Regulations
  • Knowledge and Understanding of NEC (3) contract

Desirable:

  • On site experience of the delivery of Electrical systems
  • Experience working within a consulting organisation
  • Extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices.
  • Training in Health & Safety and Environmental management
