Risk Manager

Job Introduction

Responsible for the execution, implementation, and compliance of the SCS Risk Management Plan within the designated contract Area. Manages Risk Engineers and contributes to assist in the maintenance of the Contractor’s Risk Register (in Xactium database). The Risk Manager will report to the SCS Head of Risk, key tasks include promote risk management culture, provide quality reports that satisfy the project works information and adherence to current Project risk management plan.

Role Responsibility

The Risk Manager is responsible for: 

  • Promotes a risk management culture and guidance to risk management best practices; including involvement of Area Directors and area teams and functional leads across the whole project team by integrating the various parties into the risk management process.
  • Assists the Head of Risk in risk communications and the training/education of the SCS project team (including subcontractors and suppliers) on the SCS approach to risk management and build an overall ‘risk aware culture.’
  • Implementing & monitoring the risk management process of their contract area

(Risk identification, qualitative & quantitative assessments, and mitigations) 

  • Engaging with other internal and external stakeholders including key supporting enabling functions as BIM team, design, consents, procurement, safety, design, technical assurance, commercial and/or change control.
  • Produce multiple quality risk reporting suited for different audiences (e.g. Project Area Director, Area Department Heads, etc.) to ensure risk awareness on all project levels, specific parts of the JV business and to individuals to understand their accountability for individual risks
  • Ensures full project team involvement and ensures the management of both Project risks (Contractor risks) and Programme risks (Employer risks)
  • Conducting audits of policy and compliance to Risk Management standards, including liaising with internal and external auditors and risk processes improvements
  • Contributes to integrated risk team meetings and supports across Areas as required, particularly during inputs required for project QCRA and QSRA evaluations.
  • Challenge risk evaluations by comparing estimated risks with criteria established by the project such as costs, legal requirements, and environmental factors, and evaluating the project's previous handling of risks.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong engagement and relationship building skills essential
  • Degree in civil engineering desirable or an appropriate risk related professional qualification with at least 3 years of experience an advantage
  • Awareness on risk management practices within infrastructure and other industries
  • Competence in risk management software, e.g. Xactium, or similar
  • Client focused and able to adapt on an integrated project environment
  • Able to challenge experienced team members on current status-quo
  • Resilient attitude to operate in a fast-paced environment; comfortable working on multicultural environments;
  • Prior experience in risk management functions on major projects an advantage
  • Experienced in performing quantitative cost and schedule risk assessments via Monte Carlo simulation (@risk) and Safran an advantage

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
