We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to be Reporting directly to the Area Plant Manager /Tunnel MEP Manager; the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for design and verification of all mechanical systems and equipment, above and below ground; ventilation, pressurized water systems, compressed air systems, fire-main, pumped drainage required for the construction of the Tunnels on HS2, S1 and S2 lots.

Role Responsibility

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for specification, procurement and implementation of all mechanical systems required for the tunnels construction
  • Pressurized water systems; cooling water, fire-main, de-watering, pumped drainage
  • Compressed air systems (HPCA and LPCA)
  • Tunnel forced ventilation systems
  • Conveyor system mechanical and structural implementation and commissioning
  • TBM mechanical and hydraulic commissioning and fault-finding
  • MSVs mechanical commissioning and fault-finding     
  • Grout batching plant mechanical commissioning, calibration and fault-finding.
  • Management of all specialist subcontractors undertaking mechanical works on site    
  • Safety critical role overseeing all pull testing of mechanical fixings in the tunnel lining
  • Compliance with Costain way Safe systems of works
  • Produce and implement the Electrical Operating Safety Procedures, including; Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS), Task Briefings, associated with mechanical systems installation.
  • Produce weekly / monthly progress reports to the Tunnel MEP PM highlighting variances in the budget, production targets and KPIs. Particular emphasis on all mechanical systems issues including associate down-time  
  • Develop innovative systems and processes to ensure maximum availability of equipment and safe systems of work at all times.
  • Coordinate mechanical systems requirements across all shaft / tunnel construction sites
  • Implement a planned preventative maintenance scheme and oversee the spare parts management, including the correct stock level of mechanical spares, etc.
  • Maintain all records of inspections and maintenance (planned & unplanned)  

Other Responsibilities

  • Close liaison with the immediate tunnel construction team on requirements and programme.
  • Close liaison with wider Tunnel Plant team working on East, Central and West on requirements and programme.
  • Close liaison with the SCS Safety team.
  • Close liaison with Planning teams.
  • Promoting and monitoring the roll out and implementation of SCS values and behaviours.

The Ideal Candidate

Qualifications & Skills

Essential:

  • Experience in a similar level role, responsible for the design and verification of mechanical systems associated with tunnel construction.
  • B.Eng (Hons) – Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience of all mechanical software; Autocad     
  • Strong leadership, communication and conflict management skills
  • In depth knowledge of industry regulations for, construction and testing and commissioning of mechanical tunnel equipment and services (e.g. BS 6164 and Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 and HSE ACOP and guidance L122).
  • Experienced in tunnel mechanical systems; minimum 2 years

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of tunnel mechanical systems, construction details and relevant rules, regulations and quality standards
  • Experience of a self-assurance contract environment

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
