Health and Safety Advisor

Job Introduction

Support the Health & Safety Manager in the management of H&S for Skanska-Costain-Strabag (SCS) activities, including the implementation of the H&S Management System (HSMS) to ensure compliance with ISO 45001 certification and with the Works Information.

The position plays the key role in helping to establish and maintain the highest and where possible, new industry Health and Safety standards for the project. This opportunity has an exciting dynamic of works with shafts, tunnels and civils portfolio of including over bridges, underbridges,  embankments, road alignment, earthworks and portal construction.

Role Responsibility

  • Available to carryout occasional nightshift/backshift visits, briefings, and assurances.
  • Understand the SCS Health & Safety Policies and Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the SCS operations and ensure that the requirements are implemented
  • Provide operational and functional management advice on the practical implementation of the company’s H&S policies, procedures, and processes
  • Support the implementation of the SCS Railways Values and mainly the Love for Life value which will include on site coaching to supervision and wider area team on specific topics such as predictable behaviors, targeted risk monitoring, briefing delivery and observation reporting.
  • Assist in briefing delivery for campaigns, toolbox talks and coordinating scheduled wellbeing activities
  • Assisting in undertaking a Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment of all activities and monitoring of safe systems of work
  • Conducting site inspections and undertaking audits of company procedures and work practices, as required.
  • Assist, where needed, with the development of Health and Safety Management plans if applicable and coordination of review
  • Provide operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents, and ill health
  • Assist the HSW Manager and other members of the HSW team, in key tasks to assist in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Health and Safety Management System
  • Provide advice, guidance and independence with regards to the assessment of and appointment of sub-contractors
  • Assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of H&S performance. Utilise data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation and intervention
  • Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of H&S training/ briefings, as directed.
  • Promote best practice, capture best practice and ensure it is fed-back into the business and parent companies
  • Set standards and lead by example in the management of H&S
  • Maintain own level of knowledge and competency in relations to H&S Management and responsibilities including appropriate qualifications and professional membersh

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience in relevant field of Construction / Infrastructure Health & Safety
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate/NVQ level 4 in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Construction related CSCS qualification
  • Good information management and analytical skills to review and input data entry
  • High standard of verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in relevant field of Construction / Infrastructure Health & Safety and preferrable Tunnels or Shafts environment
  • Safety, Health and Environmental Diploma, Degree or equivalent NCRQ or NVQ
  • Membership of IOSH

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
