Health Safety & Wellbeing Director
Job Introduction
We are currently recruiting for a Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Director here at SCS Railways JV.
The HSW Director is responsible for;
- Setting HSW requirements and providing guidance and assurance Developing a culture and behaviours to promote HSW throughout the design and delivery organisation. Maintain HSW rigour throughout the delivery process, with a culture of continues improvement
- Ensuring all HSW aspects of the project are compliant
Role Responsibility
- Develop, implement and embed a visionary HSW strategy for the Project in line with industry best practice and incorporate into the Projects plans, aims and objectives.
- Lead, champion and enhance the health & safety culture of the project
- Lead and manage HSW for the Project, creating a learning culture by identifying and implementing best practice in accordance with high standards of SCS JV governance. Effectively promote and communicate the HSW strategy across the Project
Implement a consistent and standardised approach to all HSW activities and maintain a high level of control.
- Develop a competent and professional HSW team capable of delivering the SCS JV requirements.
- Act as the main central focal point for all HSW activities within the SCS JV
- Maintain effective reporting systems and report to the IPLT on all HSW matters.
- Promote teamwork and support a culture of corporate accountability throughout the organization
- Ensure investigations are properly conducted and learning is shared and applied
- Report the project HSW performance to the client and to the parent companies.
- Ensure all HSW standards and legislations are adhered to at all times.
- Ensure the HSW requirements of the hybrid bill and further 3rd part agreements are adhered at all times
Statutory Duties
- Exercise independent judgement.
- Maintain awareness and knowledge of appropriate UK legislation.
- Ensure that the SCS JV HSW reporting complies with the Companies Act regulations and HSE legislation.
- Use judgement to assess the likely consequences of any decision in the long term.
- Assess the impact of the SCS JV operations on the (community?) and the environment.
Corporate Governance
- Lead by example in respect of Corporate Governance and champion its mandatory compliance across the business.
- Foster the SCS JV business relationships with suppliers, customers, and others.
- Ensure that all those within your remit and control, follow the correct processes and procedures particularly in respect of the support infrastructure, including HR, Finance, Commercial, Internal Audit etc.
Strategy
- Work closely with the IPLT to formulate SCS JV HSW Strategy in line with the strategy of the project
- Chair the project HSW meetings and, thereby, ensure key issues are addressed, performance monitored, targets set, and best practice disseminated.
HSW
- Develop a detailed action plan to achieve HSW objectives, ensuring that the project plans contribute to the achievement of these objectives, and monitoring the actions taken.
- Effectively communicate HSW activities and issues at all levels.
- Implement a set of HSW policies, procedures, manuals and guides that are consistent with good practice and are workable. Continuously review and improve these.
- Champions the accurate reporting of all injuries, ill health, and dangerous occurrences.
- Ensure an effective, consistent, and cost-effective provision of HSW training.

- Recognized Health and Safety professional accreditation
- Professional Membership
- Degree in relevant area
Experience and skills:
- Relevant experience in a complex large scale programme or business
- Previous experience of working within a Joint Venture or at board level

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services
The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
