Head of Project Controls and Reporting
Job Introduction
Our Project Controls function is one of the most important disciplines on the project as it coordinates information across the key disciplines, planning, finance, quantity surveying and it is our opportunity to demonstrate – in our reports - all the excellent work that we have done and are projected to do.
The Head of Project Controls (Area Central) is responsible for the strategic oversight of cost, earned value, quantity tracking, and reports published by the SCS Area Central project to all our stakeholders. They will coordinate data from across the area and use that data to provide insight to enable decision making. The role will be part of and directly support the Area Central Senior Leadership Team. The role will lead a team of project controls specialists as well as providing direction and guidance to the Area Asset teams. You will report to the Area Commercial Director.
The reporting function within the Project Control team coordinates information, ensures consistency, and then acts as the owner of the data that is published to external stakeholders. The key data sets are those related to Project Controls, cost, planning, and risk management. All data that is part of our reports will be coordinated by the Head of Project Controls (Area Central).
Role Responsibility
- Prepare and present monthly and quarterly reports to external and internal stakeholders.
- Taking an active role in coordinating leadership meetings required for reporting.
- Seek continuous improvement of reports, requirements, processes, and procedures.
- Liaise and assist with internal and external stakeholders.
- Schedule development and management
- Resource planning and management
- A robust understanding of cost management on major infrastructure projects
- The Change management function in the area
- Earned value management, progress measurement, and productivity metrics
- Risk and opportunity management, and quantitative risk analysis
- Development and production of reports on progress, critical paths, resources and earned value and schedule risks and issues.
- Input into the capture and monitoring of project risks, issues, mitigations and resolution
- Lead technical / programme presentations and negotiations with clients, partners and suppliers
- Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Managing Project Control Engineer(s) and other staff as appropriate
- Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.
- Overseeing iTWO operations requiring an in-depth understanding of iTWO functions and operations
- Work with the commercial team to ensure that the EVA and cost systems correlate and that the combined monthly reporting is accurate.
The Ideal Candidate
Essential Requirements:
- Experiences in P6
- Working knowledge and experience in iTWO, including controlling module applications
- Preparing Summary report for Director/Client Reporting. In depth knowledge of lower-level reports
- Management and guidance of teams
- Experience of presenting at exec level within large organisations.
- Strong analytical, and problem-solving skills and capable of analysing large datasets.
- Familiarity working in a time-pressurised environment where competing priorities and demands must be managed. Willing to deliver reports on time every month.
- An optimiser who continuously seeks better ways of delivery.
- An excellent communicator in both written reports and presentations.
Other Desirable Requirements
- High level of commitment and initiative
- Experience in use of Power BI, Project Control software (PRISM, iTWO etc)
- In depth understanding and practical experience in using Earned Value as a Project Management Tool
- Numeracy and ability to create and use Excel spreadsheets
- Project Management experience (as part of a team or otherwise)
- A meticulous eye for detail and desire to produce high quality reports.

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
