Head of Logistics

We have an exciting vacancy for a Head of Logistics here at SCS Railways JV. 


About the role

The Head of Logistics will lead the SCS Logistics functional team responsible for the management and integration of logistics activities across the SCSjv HS2 main works sites. The functional team is responsible for UK and international logistics systems and operations, the operational contract for the transport of ‘Excavated Materials by Road’, and the management of the SCS fleet as well as all operational traffic management activities for the contract. Supporting and coordinating the future demobilisation of all sites and the disposal of temporary assets will also be key responsibilities. The postholder will need to ensure excellent collaborative working and coordination to ensure the scope is delivered in adherence to the Construction Logistics Strategy and delivery plans across the geographic area of the SCS contract and ensure that effective management plans are in place and reviewed.

The Logistics function forms part of the Delivery Services directorate, which provides a range of critical services to our operational Delivery Units, to ensure the project is delivered on time, on budget and in accordance with the HS2 contract requirements. Reporting to the Delivery Services Director and forming part of the Delivery Services Leadership Team, the Head of Logistics will manage the Head of Construction Logistics, Head of Logistics Control and the Head of Traffic Management to ensure SCS Logistics maintain and enhance the industry-leading logistics service provided to the HS2 project.


Flexible working: This role will be based in the Logstics Hub in Willesden Junction (NW10 6UQ) for a minimum of 3-4 days per week

Role Responsibility

  • Leading multiple specialist teams to deliver a coordinated and high-performing logistics service to the construction delivery units, in accordance with contract, legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensuring safe operations at all times, in compliance with the SCS Health & Safety Management System and all necessary industry Standards.
  • Ensuring all Logistics management related documentation is in place and current, and that all operational activities are appropriately recorded.
  • Budget and risk management (supported by commercial colleagues) and performance reporting for all Logistics activities
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities within logistics activities across the project which will deliver operational and financial efficiency and set the standard for other projects across all the JV parent companies.
  • Internal and external stakeholder management to maintain excellent working relationships and to facilitate delivery
  • Development of staff to support career progression and/or professional development 
  • Support the establishment of the Delivery Services directorate as a cohesive and effective function, creating a positive and supportive culture, working with the directorate leadership team to determine the strategic direction of the directorate.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Construction Logistics Practitioner or other relevant professional accreditation
  • Active Member of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
  • Significant logistics management experience in complex large-scale projects or businesses
  • Experience of FORS and CLoCS
  • Broad knowledge and practical experience of relevant legal requirements and how to comply with them, including construction logistics planning, managing vehicle and driver safety
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of both site establishment and demobilisation requirements
  • Experience of effective engagement and collaboration with stakeholders at a senior level

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
