GIS Technician/Developer

Job Introduction

This is a crucial role for Area West. The Area West GIS Person will act as a flexible and responsive resource – serving the Area West Team as well as the project at large.

They will provide GIS support to various disciplines such as BIM, Site, Environment & Community Engagements Teams, as well as acting as the primary point of contact for all GIS enquiries within Area West.

Role Responsibility

The role includes tasks such as:

  • Maintaining and updating Area West data upon our ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Online Platforms – updating Drone Imagery, 2D and 3DGIS representation of Assets
  • Managing a Vegetation Clearance Permit (VCP) System (an ArcGIS Survey123 App created using Survey123 Connect).
  • Preparing GIS Data in response to requests and for GIS deliverables to HS2.
  • Conversions between coordinate systems (HS2 Snakegrid, British National Grid, WGS84 etc) using ArcGIS Pro and FME. Knowledge of coordinate systems and transformations is essential.
  • Conversions between data types (CAD/BIM files and GIS files) using FME.
  • Developing prototypes for new ArcGIS Integrations – with platforms such as PowerBI, Zutec and Aphex. (The objective is to make our GIS Environment the main go-to for all project data).
  • Generally looking for new angles to enhance and improve the service which we provide to the project.
  • Support the BIM team, handling and processing BIM models, using FME.

 

SUMMARY:

There will be much potential for technical solution development and implementation of automated processes and workflows to either develop QA tools, or reduce the manual intervention that may be required during data entry/processing/verification.

The ideal candidate will strive to continuously improve data, proactively searching for new information that can be integrated into the data. Where errors are discovered – investigating and fixing the problem.

This role will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to gain a working knowledge in a range of Geographic Information Systems (predominantly the ArcGIS suite but also FME). The successful candidate will also be exposed to existing automated processes and workflows and receive constant guidance as part of the upskilling programme and workshops that take place within the team. Lastly, the successful candidate will have exposure in the latest technologies in the geospatial world being implemented in such a project (Mobile solutions, IoT, 3D/4D in GIS).

The successful candidate will be required to identify and implement the most appropriate and efficient geospatial workflows and processes, and to manage GIS data correctly and efficiently.

The Ideal Candidate

Required qualifications, skills, behaviors and attributes

  • The primary aspect of this job is of database maintenance and reconciliation, so it is imperative that the successful candidate is interested in designing and developing automated workflows to process geodata, but also enjoys the process of sorting, tidying and organising GIS data.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in GIS, Geography or Surveying, or relevant experience is required.
  • Experience of the ESRI ArcGIS Suite, Geographic Data Management and FME would be advantageous, although not essential.
  • Experience of creating applications for Mobile Solutions such as Survey123 or Collector is desirable.
  • Experience using Survey123 Connect is desirable, as well as the use of Power Automate and Integromat/Make to extend Surve123 capabilities.  
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro Model Builder or ArcPy to automate processes would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of CAD/BIM would be advantageous.
  • Fluent in the use of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), email/internet, other IT applications.
  • Experience in working with, editing and loading to databases would be advantageous, although not essential.
  • Effective communicator and collaborative in approach – the role will involve working with numerous people from different parties

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
