GIS Technician / Developer

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

The GIS Technician / Developer will split their time equally between the Environment Team and the Community Engagement Team; providing a GIS Service to each. The ability to prioritise will be crucial to this role – as competing tasks/workloads from the Environment Team and Community Engagement Team will need to be managed and balanced.

Role Responsibility

Primary Responsibilities within the Environment Team:

  • Drive the implementation of the HS2 GIS Ecology Data Schema and liaise with various subcontractors and consultancies, to ensure that all Ecology data is being collected according to the HS2 Official Schema.
  • Produce and update Environmental Constraints maps, as a key addition to the Environment Team’s ECP's (Environmental Constraint Plans).
  • Oversee the Quality Assurance of No Net Loss (NNL) Ecology data (a quarterly GIS Data deliverable to HS2, which is produced by a subcontractor). The No Net Loss data deliverable is subject to rigorous data standards, therefore it is likely that regular liaison will be required between the successful candidate and the subcontractors who produce the data.
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests from the Environment Team.

Primary Responsibilities with the Consents & Community Engagement Team:

  • Create, maintain and update a consents database; taking existing data/information from multiple sources, and compiling it into a single usable database, which can be made available to project staff via ArcGIS Portal / ArcGIS Online.
  • Create, maintain and update a buildings surveys database; taking existing data/information from the surveys team and formatting it so that it can be made available to project staff via ArcGIS Portal / ArcGIS Online.
  • Create, maintain and update an Undertakings and Assurances database; taking the Undertakings and Assurances Register, and manipulating it so that it can be made available to project staff via ArcGIS Portal / ArcGIS Online.
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests from the Community Engagement Team.

Summary:

There will be much potential for technical solution development and implementation of automated processes and workflows to either develop QA tools, or reduce the manual intervention that may be required during data entry/processing/verification.

The ideal candidate would continuously strive to improve the team databases, proactively searching for new information that can be integrated into the data. Where errors are discovered – investigating and fixing the problem.

This role will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to gain a working knowledge in a range of Geographic Information Systems (predominantly the ArcGIS suite but also FME). The successful candidate will also be exposed to existing automated processes and workflows and receive constant guidance as part of the upskilling programme and workshops that take place within the team. Lastly, the successful candidate will have exposure in the latest technologies in the geospatial world being implemented in such a project (Mobile solutions, IoT, 3D/4D in GIS).

The successful candidate will be required to identify and implement the most appropriate and efficient geospatial workflows and processes, and to manage GIS data correctly and efficiently.

The Ideal Candidate

  • The primary aspect of this job is of database maintenance and reconciliation, so it is imperative that the successful candidate is interested in designing and developing automated workflows to process geodata, but also enjoys the process of sorting, tidying and organising GIS data.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in GIS, Geography or Surveying.
  • Experience of the ESRI ArcGIS Suite, Geographic Data Management and FME would be advantageous, although not essential.
  • Experience using Mobile Solutions such as Survey123 or Collector is desirable.
  • Fluent in the use of standard Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), email/internet, other IT applications.
  • Experience in working with, editing and loading to databases would be advantageous, although not essential.
  • Effective communicator and collaborative in approach – the role will involve working with numerous people from different parties
