Facilitator/Writer (Knowledge Management)

About the role:

You will be joining a team of project improvement specialists with a background in knowledge sharing, improvement techniques and innovation project management. As part of this team, you will support the project’s ambition to be a learning organisation, to continuously improve and to support the advancement of the construction industry.

Working under the Project Knowledge Manager, you will be responsible for leading lessons learnt workshops, including documenting their outcome to share across the project, as well as seeking out good practice and encouraging better person-to-person engagement to  encourage knowledge  sharing. You will support the Project Knowledge Manager to deliver and implement the knowledge management strategy.  

You will need to build relationships with people at all levels in the project to develop and support quality knowledge sharing in an environment predominantly driven by programme and budget pressures. You will advocate for learning and good practice reviews, as well as learning exercises, supporting the project to develop a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

This is a role for someone who is comfortable taking initiative and building relationships, or ready to stretch themselves. You will need to be able to develop your own approach to delivering your responsibilities within the wider strategy.

Role Responsibility

  • Facilitate lessons learnt exercises and other gatherings of subject matter experts, ensuring valuable output and actions are recorded to enable sharing with wider teams
  • Identifying, creating and editing/ strengthening written case studies in collaboration with construction experts to maximise opportunity for others to learn from this form of knowledge
  • File case studies, reports and other learning material in the knowledge hub (SharePoint site), ensuring they are correctly tagged to enable easy search and retrieval by project staff
  • Manage a communication plan for knowledge management, ensuring regular communications that share good practice and learning, as well as raises the profile of those sharing their learning
  • Working with colleagues from the Project Improvement team, engage colleagues across all levels to promote a culture of improvement through various initiatives, including ‘Improvement Roadshows’ and collaborating on cross-departmental projects
  • Own and drive a system to support person-to-person sharing across remote sites, encouraging fast communication of daily good practice and learning, and encouraging building relationships between site staff
  • Identify and monitor other knowledge sharing forums established to ensure visibility of the knowledge sharing activities to our client
  • Support monthly reporting of knowledge activities as required by Project Knowledge Manager
  • Champion a learning culture where learning is sought as a foundation for planning new works, and analysed at the close of activities.
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Essential: have a growth mindset and be comfortable with, or able to accept, ambiguity and having to try different approaches
  • Essential: ability to facilitate groups of subject matter experts to get maximum engagement from contributors and produce concise and clear output reports
  • Essential: be comfortable with modern technology and Office 365 and be willing and able to develop knowledge further to support the knowledge manager in maintaining a high-quality knowledge database
  • Essential: a strong ability with written English to be able to edit or write from scratch and simplify overly complex concepts into concise Plain English
  • Desirable: experience with construction projects is highly advantageous, or comfort with being persistently curious to quickly build up your knowledge of unfamiliar concepts
  • Desirable: a passion for driving improvement and helping others to get their time back

About the Company

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
