Environmental Systems and Performance Manager (Return to Work)

Job Introduction

This role is part of our Return to Work programme, in collaboration with Women Returners.  We welcome professionals with a career break of 2 or more years to apply.

You will be placed in a team where your skills and experience will be valued and utilised for an initial 6 month placement. We will provide tailored support to help your transition back to work. This will include a dedicated coach, a specific training and support programme, a workplace buddy and the opportunity to join our network of Returners within the project.

At the end of the placement there will be the opportunity to join the team on a permanent basis.  

This role is required to oversee the maintenance and update of the SCSJV environmental management system in line with ISO 14001:2015 to client and parent company requirements. This role also holds overarching responsibility for environmental reporting & performance improvement.

Through analysis of data, determining opportunities for improvement and leading on capitalisation of such opportunities across the contract.

This role will report to the Core team lead – the Environment Assurance Manager and will be supported part time by various members of the core Environment team.

Role Responsibility

  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the contract's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.
  • Manage & Maintain the Environmental Management System (EMS), certified to ISO 14001:2015, ensuring it remains appropriate to all contract risks. Monitor and report performance against targets and drive innovation and continuous improvement throughout the contract team.
  • Ensure Environmental Minimum Requirements, including Code of Construction Practice and the relevant Undertakings and Assurances are captured, communicated and assured through the Environmental Management System
  • Provide key liaison and collaboration role between technical specialists and operational delivery teams – ensuring technical requirements are effectively captured and communicated to be delivered in a practical, efficient way.
  • Manage Environmental Data & Reporting across the contract, implementing efficiencies and improvements to facilitate effective decision making

The Ideal Candidate

  • Significant environmental system management experience in the construction industry on large infrastructure projects or equivalent, comparable industry/projects.
  • Chartered Environmentalist, Full Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or equivalent, and ISO 14001 Lead Auditor qualifications
  • Process driven, system thinker with the ability to see the bigger picture and interconnectivity of the system required
  • High level attention to detail and ability to prioritize deliverables.
  • Experience with use of the wider Microsoft office software, including PowerBi and Forms would be a distinct advantage
  • Demonstrates a passion for the Environment and Sustainability, driving innovation and a desire to positively influence and develop those around them

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £3.5billion with the works due for completion in 2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
