Electrical Engineer - Tunnels

We currently have an opening for a Electrical Engineer to join the Tunneling team based at  Area central - North Acton.

Reporting to the Electrical Superintendent, you will be supporting the electrical department to complete all assigned tasks in a timely and safe manner. Additionally, you will be in charge of redacting the Method Statement and Risk assessment for the TBM activities, while also ensuring the Tool Box records are kept up to date.

Role Responsibility

  • Responsible for specification, procurement and implementation of all electrical distribution systems required for the tunnels construction
  • Above ground and tunnel electrical lighting scheme
  • Surface and tunnel Conveyor system electrical distribution
  • TBM electrical commissioning and fault-finding
  • MSVs electrical commissioning and fault-finding   
  • Grout batching plant commissioning, calibration and fault-finding.
  • Management of all specialist subcontractors undertaking electrical works on site   
  • Safety critical role overseeing all electrical system installations
  • Compliance with Costain way Safe systems of works
  • Oversee training and appointment of all electrical engineers 
  • Produce and implement the Electrical Operating Safety Procedures, including; Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS), Task Briefings, associated with electrical distribution.
  • Produce weekly / monthly progress reports to the Tunnel MEP PM highlighting variances in the budget, production targets and KPIs. Particular emphasis on all electrical system issues including associated down-time 
  • Overseeing the electrical based operations to ensure the key roles are staffed with people that are competent and can effectively and safely undertake their roles on the project.
  • Develop innovative systems and processes to ensure maximum availability of equipment and safe systems of work at all times.
  • Coordinate electrical distribution systems requirements across all shaft / tunnel construction sites
  • Implement a planned preventative maintenance scheme and oversee the spare parts management, including the correct stock level of electrical consumables, etc.
  • Maintain all records of inspections and maintenance (planned & unplanned) 
  • Currently the only electrical design engineering support for the HS2 project is from the authorising engineer, who spends ½ his time resolving utilities issues out on site (unknown cables, cable strikes, etc)
  • We now need to detail all the site layouts, mains distribution, sub-mains distribution.

Required qualifications, skills, behaviors and attributes

  • Educated to Degree standard or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • Knowledge of UK electrical standards and regulations.
  • Ability to keep electrical installations up to standard.
  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders and sub-contractors.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an electrical engineer in similar role.
  • Experience on TBM construction projects.
  • To be familiar with TBMs, conveyor systems, water treatment plants, MSV vehicles, communication systems, ventilation systems and cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, material, electrical codes, standards, regulations and electrical drawings.
  • Knowledge of High and Low voltage electrical systems.
  • Pro-active and solution focused.
  • Knows how to manage his own time and work.
  • Good communication skills in both verbal and written English is essential.

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both

Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is

around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels

(TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks

and the construction of site compounds.
