Contracts Officer

Job Introduction

Reporting directly to the OMC Director, the role requires someone who is contractually proficient with a good attention to detail who has had previous experience in a similar role.

Working closely with the Area Delivery, Technical and Procurement teams whilst working for the Commercial department, the Contracts Officer will be responsible for ensuring that contractual communications, notices and orders are in accordance with and in in the spirit of the contractual terms. Management of these elements across the various areas set-up within the overall project to ensure parity and consistency of approach is critical.

The Contracts Officer will provide contractual governance and due diligence to ensure that documentation produced meets the exceptions of the business and is dealt with responsibly and in accordance with contractual terms.

Reporting will be produced to the relevant stakeholders as appropriate.

Role Responsibility

  • Manage routine contractual business correspondence.
  • Assist in the development and review of robust contracts and documentation in line with the requirements of the contract.
  • Support the production of contract variations and updating the contract documentation.
  • Act as ‘gate-keeper’ for all contractual correspondence across the project areas.
  • Be proactive in the development of commercial and contractual processes, plans and procedures and contribute to the re-design of these processes, plans and procedures as the project develops
  • Maintain professional standards and provide commercial support and advice to staff and internal stakeholders
  • Working closely with the change team to ensure that any change submissions do not prejudice other issues relating to price, Key Dates, Incentives or other contractual matters
  • Communicating with internal and external parties regarding governance meetings, including drafting up agendas, communicating regarding the purpose of the meeting and ensuring attendees time is used purposefully
  • Reference point for all contractual correspondence in relation to the wider project.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the contract database is kept up to date and that any supplemental agreements/changes are managed effectively
  • To record and maintain the agreed contract values and any variations within the Contract database.
  • Assist in the resolution of any issues raised in relation to changes to the contract
  • Working with the Employer’s team to resolve any issues that may arise with contractual notices and/or correspondence
  • Deliver training to ensure relevant colleagues are knowledgeable and kept up-to-date with best practice
  • Delivery of regular management reporting directly to the OMC Director
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Educated to Degree (or equivalent) – essential.
  • Professional qualification - FRICS (or equivalent) – essential
  • Legal or contracts qualification – desirable
  • ADR experience – desirable
  • Evidence of contract management experience
  • Demonstrable experience in dealing with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Packages (especially Excel) and IT database systems
  • Excellent numerical reasoning and problem solving
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a large team
  • Able to organise and prioritise workload
  • Experience dealing with the Corporate Governance requirements of an organisation and also solid experience dealing with contracts
  • Excellent working knowledge of the NEC3 suite of contracts
  • Excellent Commercial experience within the UK construction industry
  • Working within a joint venture
  • Working on major infrastructure projects
  • Reporting to Managers on contractual and commercial position
  • Experience of working in a complex and adaptive environment
  • Team management experience

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
