Assistant Engineering Manager

Role
The Assistant Engineering Manager (AEM) for Shafts and Headhouses supports the Senior Engineering Managers – Civils and Architectural Fit Out (AFO) and the Asset Engineering Managers with the technical delivery of designated headhouse, shaft, civils, MEP and AFO elements. The AEM assists in coordinating engineering activities across relevant disciplines and ensuring the works are developed, assured and delivered in compliance with project requirements.
The AEM works closely with technical leads, design managers, construction teams and other stakeholders to help achieve high‑quality, compliant, well‑coordinated engineering solutions.
This role reports to the Senior Engineering Manager for Shafts and Headhouses, with day‑to‑day direction from the Asset Engineering Managers.
Role Responsibility
The SCS Engineering Manager – Headhouses & Fitout is responsible for:
- Support the Senior Engineering Managers and Asset Engineering Managers in delivering engineering activities across S&H assets.
- Assist with discipline coordination to ensure design and construction information is consistent, technically correct and integrated.
- Support the implementation of the SCS Engineering Management Plan, standards, processes, and procedures.
- Contribute to constructability reviews and technical assurance activities.
- Support the Senior Engineering Managers and Asset Engineering Manager in discharging Lead Designer duties where delegated.
- Assist in managing technical documentation, assurance records and engineering deliverables.
- Help monitor and manage technical change, ensuring impacts are identified and escalated appropriately.
- Support the review of departures, deviations and NTSN-related design considerations, liaising with SMEs where necessary.
- Promote and champion Health, Safety and Welfare (HS&W) within engineering activities.
- Support the fostering of a strong EDI culture and positive team behaviours.
- Contribute to ensuring design and construction approaches consider safe buildability, maintenance, in‑use safety and system operability.
- Support liaison activities with internal teams such as Planning, Commercial, Quality, Consents & Engagement.
- Assist in managing interfaces with third parties and specialist subcontractors, providing technical input where required.
- Help track technical actions, queries and coordination items across multiple teams.
- Assist in identifying, managing, communicating and mitigating engineering‑related risks.
- Support monitoring of technical change control processes.
- Contribute ideas for engineering innovation, efficiency and process improvement across S&H assets.
- Support CSS and Engineering Managers in coordinating design queries, temporary works inputs, and technical submissions with DH.
- Help track DH deliverables, ensure timely responses, and maintain accurate technical records.

Required Qualifications & Skills
- Educated to degree or higher and hold relevant professional qualification
- Sustained Continuing Professional Development.
- Extensive experience in project-based design and engineering management across all project stages
- Extensive experience of large complex projects in the rail, highways, water or energy sectors.
- Expert understanding of Engineering Principles and extensive technical knowledge
- Experience of managing the challenges associated with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Understanding of digital engineering in design and construction phases and of using the Digital Plan of Works.
- Strong communication and leadership skills
