Assistant Design Manager

Role

As the Assistant Design Manager, you will be responsible for the design management of work packages allocated to you and their delivery to the agreed plan.

You will manage and coordinate with design teams and sub-contractors for the packages you are allocated so their activities are planned and programmed and integrate with the project programme.

You will work in accordance with the Design Management Plan, ensuring design control processes / governance are applied.     That designs coordinate and integrate as they develop, and information is shared between parties so that designs proceed as planned.

You will verify the information exchanged is complete, of the quality required and where appropriate, is checked by suitable competent people. 

As design progresses you will ensure the designs remain in line with their scope requirements.

You will support the Design Manager / Senior Design Manger when dealing with Commercial, Construction Team and Planners.

You will support Design leadership in undertaking the Lead Designer activities for self-assurance. 

You will contribute to monthly updates and weekly meetings, support in identifying issues and in the plans to mitigate delays or cost increases.

You will support the Design Manager / Senior Design Manager with your contribution to project reports and metrics.

Role Responsibility

  • Verify that deliverables for your package are the right quality and on time;
  • Programme is updated as per contract;
  • Procedures, processes, controls, governance and workflows as set out in the Design Management Plan are adhered to;
  • Coordination and integration of design ensuring good, clear communication is maintained between the various parties throughout the engagement, 
  • Ensure scope, deliverables, outputs and formats are clear with the parties, and have an understanding of the responsibilities, outputs and deliverables set out in the Design Responsibility Matrix;
  • Within your package, work with the commercial and project team to ensure change is managed and coordinated both technically and for programme and cost;
  • Organise or contribute to design meetings, each with an agenda, minutes and actions;
  • Undertake/support in Lead Designer activities for self-assurance 
  • Engage with stakeholders and approving parties ensuring that designs align with requirements and expectations met in delivery.
  • Design Maturity of your package is assessed and tracked

The Ideal Candidate

    • A relevant degree in Civil Engineering or another constructionrelated discipline, or equivalent experience. Candidates currently working towards a qualification are also encouraged to apply.
    • Experience gained within a Contractor, Designer or Client environment on projects of a similar scale and complexity, gained through employment, placements or comparable professional experience.
    • An understanding of technical processes, including design assurance, with a willingness to develop further through learning and collaboration.
    • The ability to work effectively with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders, including Statutory Authorities, Local Authorities, Transport for London, Network Rail, HS2 Ltd and National Highways.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build positive working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
    • Experience in, or the ability to quickly learn, project information management tools and systems, including MS Office and webbased collaboration platforms such as AssetWise, eB, ProjectWise or similar.
  • Holds, or is able to obtain prior to commencement of employment, a valid CSCS Card in an appropriate category (e.g. Professionally Qualified Person or Manager), with support provided where required.

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
