Assistant Buyer

Job Introduction

Purpose of the assistant Buyer role is to manage the procurement of materials and plant in accordance with SCS Way, Standards, Policies and Procedures. Working in accordance with the Project Procurement Plan (strategy) and to carry out procurement in an ethical, transparent and fair way.

Role Responsibility

  • Supporting the Area Snr Buyer in procurement of materials, plant and equipment to suit the needs and demand of the project and to ensure continuity of the works in accordance with the SCS procurement processes
  • Maintaining positive relationships with all stakeholders involved in the procurement process
  • Issues robust enquiries providing clarity of SCS requirements
  • Supporting the procurement team with prequalification and tender list development
  • Produce accurate and logical quotation comparisons to demonstrate best value
  • Conducts supplier meetings and negotiations where required for material or plant
  • Completion of all purchase orders, hires and off hires on E1 for material, plant and equipment, including issuing of purchase/hire orders following the requisition process.
  • Administration and maintenance of all documentation associated with the SCS procurement processes
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to resolve order/invoice queries
  • Maintain the use of Key supply frameworks
  • Complete quarterly supply chain performance reviews for material and plant suppliers
  • Work with the Lead Buyer and Supply Chain Manager to improve levels of performance of the supply chain
  • Work efficiently and professionally during periods of pressure
  • Ensure all transactional procurement activity is carried out in accordance with the SCS Sustainable Procurement Policy.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • Effective communication skills and ability to work closely with internal and external customers
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint

Ideal candidate

  • 3-4+ years experience of material and plant buying on a major project
  • Working knowledge of Oracle E1 system or a similar procurement system for material and plant hire procurement
  • Experience of working on major civil engineering or rail projects
  • Experience of working in joint venture organisations delivering infrastructure projects

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
