Area Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW)

Job Introduction

As Area Head of HSW, you will be heading up a team of Health, Safety and Wellbeing professionals and responsible for the HSW of your £1bn+ project. You will support the HSW Director and your project Senior Leadership Team to ensure the highest of standards in Health, Safety & Wellbeing are upheld on your project/area.

You will be responsible for supporting implementation and delivery of the SCS HSW Strategy, with key input into its development and delivery.

You will be accountable for providing proactive leadership on the project in line with SCS values to embed and drive a positive health, safety and wellbeing culture. As a key member of the project senior leadership team, you will have the ability to recognise and develop site specific strategic and operational opportunities and focus resource to meet the project needs.

 

You will be working in 1 of 3 areas/projects and a 3-way joint venture, it is therefore essential that  you are a collaborative person used to working towards consistent goals within a matrix organisation and with a geographically dispersed  team.

Area/project locations on the wider programme:

Area West – [Your project] Based in West Ruislip, this project will consist of tunnelling with two TBMs, significant major Civils and groundworks and construction of two ventilation shafts.

Area Central– Based out of Old Oak Common, this project will consist of 7 TBMs, 4 Shafts and complex logistics movements.

Area East – Based out of Euston, this project will mainly consist of large complex SCL works.

 

 

 

 

Role Responsibility

  • Leading the Area Health, Safety and Wellbeing team to support the development of the contract design and safe construction whilst influencing best practice and innovation
  • Support delivery of the HSW Strategy within the area and achievement of KPI targets
  • Establishing a strong relationship with the SCS HSW Services Team and managing your project/area in accordance with directions from Area West Project Director and, functionally, from the HSW Director
  • Providing operational and functional management advice to the design and delivery teams on the practical implementation of the company’s HSW policies and processes including external stakeholders
  • Use evidence-based information i.e., performance data from monitoring and analysis to make appropriate interventions and implement safer and healthier ways of working
  • Utilising the wider HSW teams and experience in the SCS businesses to provide the right level of expert advice to the project
  • Leading in the development and implementation of behavioural strategies to positively influence a safe and healthy working culture
  • Ensuring the design teams consider H, S and W and influence the designing out of these risks

Forming strong relationships with the Client ensuring the benefits of SCS are understood and

  • influence the provision of the relevant support framework
  • Providing operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents and ill health
  • Providing a mentoring role to the SCSJV delivery team
  • Undertaking and/or assisting Contract Management in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, HSE, EA, and others
  • Providing advice, guidance with regards to the assessing and managing of the supply chain
  • Ensuring that a robust program of HSW assurance is in place to support safe delivery, for example the implementation of the CTRM process
  • Assisting and/ or managing the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents
  • Assisting in the preparation and implementation of HSW training/ briefings, as directed
  • Promoting best practice, capture best practice and ensure it is fed-back into the business
  • Setting standards and lead by example in the management of HSW
  • Liaising with the other members of the HSW Team and the wider organisation (Skanska, Costain and Strabag) and HS2 with regards to HSW
  • Maintaining own level of knowledge and competency in relations to HSW Management and responsibilities including appropriate qualifications and professional membership
  • Obtaining competency cards in line with the company Competence Card Compliance Standard
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations.

 

The Ideal Candidate

  • Safety, Health and Environmental Diploma, degree or equivalent NCRQ or NVQ
  • Working towards CMIOSH or equivalent
  • 10 years H&S related experience
  • Major and/or Mega Project Experience
  • Experience of managing large teams
  • Collaborative Behaviour
  • Desired
  • Safety, Health and/or Environmental Degree
  • Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5
  • Training Qualifications
  • CMIOSH or equivalent
  • 10 years relevant SHE experience in construction/engineering industry and management and training of others experience
  • Framework Behaviours: Persuasive, Socially Confident, Democratic, Adaptable.
